4 Ways To Improve A Home’s Insulation

The pursuit of a well-insulated home is motivated not only by the comfort and the need to stay warm. In fact, with the rising costs of energy, utility bills are prompting many to reevaluate their home’s efficiency. Then, there are also the environmental reasons, with improved home insulation reducing residential carbon footprints and promoting greater sustainability at home.

Achieving better insulation at home isn’t solely about the quality of insulating material, that which is stuffed into wall cavities and used to wrap around water pipes. In fact, a home’s insulation occurs in many ways, with various aspects promoting or hindering the internal temperature of a property. To show you how simple improvements can be, however, we’re sharing four of the most common and effective ways to improve your own home’s insulation.

Draught-Proofing

Even a well-insulated home can be very quickly undermined, as many are, by a draught. Often, the culprit is a window or door, one that no longer keep external climate conditions at bay. In such circumstances, the ideal resolution would be to replace the aged or damaged assets. This, however, can be a significant cost to residents, especially when considering the small amount of air being let into a home.

Thankfully, there are a number of ways in which draughts can be fixed or mitigated. Should a resident be able to isolate the exposed area, filler can be applied, or a similar sealant. There are also draught excluders that can be effective additions, as well as heavy curtains.

Insulate Pipes

Central heating systems can seem robust but they nonetheless benefit from support. Insulating pipes is a smart idea because it both improves energy efficiency throughout the home and helps to prevent pipes from freezing during the winter months. Residents should also think about the distance of their taps from their boiler. If water needs to travel from across the home, then it may lose a significant amount of heat along the way.

Seal Spaces

Alongside the potential for draughts in a home, there is also the concept of air tightness. Well-contained living spaces, such as log cabins, are a great example because they are, by design, comfortable and enclosed environments. However, certain living space designs and older properties may struggle.

Aged floorboards, fireplaces, and open-plan living spaces are all examples of potential concerns. Old floorboards develop gaps and allow air to pass through, in the same way an unsealed fireplace will allow cold air to rush in. Covering such assets up during the colder months will make a significant difference to a home’s heat retention.

Replace Windows

While there is an aforementioned cost, replacing windows remains one of the most effective ways to insulate a home and it is often single-glazed or sash windows that lead to poor insulation within a home. Even double-glazed windows are now being improved upon with triple-glazed designs.

Since windows are the most direct way an internal living space connects with the climate outside, it is crucial that homeowners first consider the efficiency of their windows, including aluminium window grills, which you can easily find from suppliers such as AT Aluminium.
